When treating yellowing on a cotton jacket, the first thing to understand is that cotton naturally has a light yellow tone. Since we never saw this jacket's original color, it's hard to tell how yellow it was to begin with. Still, the many obvious yellow marks showed that it clearly needed treatment.

We handled it in two steps:

  1. Remove dirt and oil first: We assumed the jacket may not have come fully clean in a home washing machine, so we started by washing the dirt out of the fabric fibers. This was done in a stainless steel tub; the water in the tub shows the dirt that came out after the first soak.
  2. Then treat the yellowing: Making sure the metal zipper would not rust or oxidize, we removed the yellowed areas using a safe method.

Fortunately, this approach left the jacket looking much brighter, and the stains and yellow spots were successfully removed.
