Removing Dye Transfer Around a Hermès Logo
We hear about problems with this Hermès garment fairly often: the leather's colorfastness isn't good enough, so during washing the dye spreads to the fabric around it.
If you're lucky, only this one garment is ruined; if you're unlucky, other clothes in the same wash suffer too.
After the dye transfer treatment, we also reinforced the color fixing so the garment can be worn for longer.
Why Leather Labels and Leather Logos Bleed Onto Fabric
With a garment like this one, the problem is that the leather part doesn't have enough colorfastness. During washing, dye dissolves out of the leather and spreads into the fabric next to it, and in serious cases it can also stain other clothes in the same load.
Luxury Garment Dye Transfer: Process and Risks
- When we receive the item, we first check where the leather label is, what the fabric is, and how large and how dark the stained area is.
- Before we start, we explain how far we can take it and what the risks are. We only begin once you agree.
- Color that has been in the fibers for a long time may only fade, not disappear. We'll tell you honestly when we give the quote.
What Is Reinforced Color Fixing?
After the dye transfer treatment, depending on the garment's condition, we may add a color-fixing step. The goal is to lower the chance of color bleeding in later washes. Color fixing reduces the risk, but it can't stop leather with poor colorfastness from ever bleeding again, so you still need to take care when washing it in the future.
Washing Garments With Leather Labels at Home
- Wash it alone, separate from other clothes. If the care label says "wash with like colors," the colorfastness is on the weaker side.
- Turn it inside out and put it in a laundry bag.
- Spin it and hang it to dry right after washing; don't leave it sitting wet. Garments that combine dark and light colors are especially likely to bleed into themselves when left damp.
