Item description

GORE-TEX Waterproof Performance Jackets: Professional Cleaning and DWR Care

Overview

After long use, GORE-TEX waterproof jackets, hiking jackets and other performance wear build up sweat, skin oil, sunscreen and dust. This leads to odor, an outer fabric that soaks up water, and weaker water repellency.

EN Laundry assesses the right professional cleaning method based on the care label, the material construction and the condition of the coating. We help remove dirt and detergent residue and, depending on the garment's condition, maintain its DWR water repellency to extend the life of your performance wear.

Why Has My GORE-TEX Jacket Stopped Repelling Water?

When rain no longer beads up and instead gradually soaks into the outer fabric, the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish may have lost its effect.

This soaking of the outer fabric is called wet-out.

The GORE-TEX waterproof membrane and the outer DWR finish do different jobs. When the outer fabric wets out, even if the membrane is still intact, breathability may suffer and you may feel hot and damp.

However, a wetted-out outer fabric does not mean the membrane is necessarily intact. If there is actual leaking, delamination or other structural damage, it needs a separate assessment.

Professional Cleaning and Care Process

1. Material and care label check

We check the waterproof membrane, seam tape, outer fabric, zippers and any existing aging to confirm the right cleaning method.

2. Cleaning sweat and dirt

Using a suitable liquid detergent, we treat the collar, cuffs, underarms and other areas where skin oil, sweat and dust tend to build up.

3. Gentle washing and thorough rinsing

Where the manufacturer's care label allows, we follow GORE-TEX's official recommendation of washing at about 40°C, with a gentle cycle, a low-speed spin and thorough rinsing to reduce detergent residue.

4. Drying and DWR heat reactivation

Styles that may be tumble dried are dried gently as officially recommended, then given suitable heat treatment after drying to improve the existing DWR's water repellency.

5. Water repellency check and re-proofing

If the outer fabric still doesn't bead water well after cleaning, we assess whether a new DWR treatment is needed. This treatment depends on whether the material is suitable and is quoted separately, with your consent.

GORE-TEX Jacket Cleaning FAQ

Q: Can GORE-TEX jackets be washed in water?

Most regular GORE-TEX jackets can be washed following the manufacturer's care label. Proper cleaning helps remove dirt and sweat and keeps the garment performing.

Q: Can GORE-TEX be dry cleaned?

We don't dry clean by default. Consumer GORE-TEX products are mainly washed in water, and we only use a dry-cleaning process when the care label clearly requires it. We don't use fabric softener, powder detergent or chlorine bleach.

Q: Will cleaning restore the waterproofing?

If only the DWR water repellency has dropped, proper cleaning, heat treatment or re-proofing may improve the outer fabric's water repellency. But if the membrane is cracked, the seam tape has come off or the layers have delaminated, cleaning alone cannot fix it.

Q: Do GORE-TEX jackets need to be cleaned often?

We recommend cleaning regularly based on how often you wear the jacket and how dirty it gets. There's no need to wait until it is very dirty or smells. Skin oil, sweat and pollutants that build up over time can affect water repellency and the garment's life.

Q: Can all waterproof jackets be tumble dried or re-proofed?

No. Some special constructions, such as GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY, are not suited to regular tumble drying or DWR re-proofing. The right method depends on the product's construction and care label.

Q: What should I watch out for when washing a GORE-TEX jacket at home?

Check the care label first and follow the manufacturer's recommended temperature and cycle. Use a liquid detergent and a gentle cycle, and rinse thoroughly to reduce residue. Don't use fabric softener, powder detergent or chlorine bleach. For styles whose care label allows tumble drying, gentle tumble drying helps improve the outer fabric's water repellency.

Q: How are performance jackets with a down lining cleaned and priced?

For styles with a down lining, please select "Jacket with down lining" when ordering; it is currently +NT$150. Down needs several rinses and staged drying to break up clumps, so it takes a little longer than a regular performance jacket.

Q: When is DWR re-proofing needed, and how is it quoted?

Only if the outer fabric still won't bead water after cleaning and heat treatment do we need to reapply a DWR treatment. It depends on whether the material is suitable and is quoted separately based on the garment's condition. We only do it with your consent.

Q: What if the seam tape is peeling or the layers have delaminated?

This is structural damage that cleaning cannot fix, and cleaning may even make the existing damage more visible. If we find it at pickup, we will tell you first and suggest having it assessed by the manufacturer or a professional repair service.

Before Cleaning

If performance wear has been kept in damp conditions or not cleaned regularly, or already has an aging waterproof coating, deteriorating seam tape or brittle fabric, cleaning may make the existing damage more visible.

Professional cleaning is not membrane repair, and it cannot restore factory performance for certain.

EN Laundry assesses whether a garment can be cleaned based on its current condition. For garments that already show a clear risk of deterioration, we tell you before cleaning what changes may occur.

Thank you for trusting us. To make sure your clothes and valuables get proper care and to protect both sides, please read the following notes carefully before sending items for cleaning:

1. Please check before sending items (basis of our disclaimer)

Empty all pockets:Please check pockets carefully before handing over items. We are not responsible for storing or compensating for cash, IDs, jewelry, earphones, receipts or other valuables left behind. If we find anything, we will keep it safe and return it, but please check to avoid unnecessary disputes.

Tell us about existing flaws:If a garment already has tears, loose seams, dye stains, fading, loose buttons, heavy yellowing or moth holes, please tell the counter staff when you drop it off, or let us know on LINE.

Valuable or high-end items (e.g. Chanel/Hermès bags, high-end leather, tailored suits): we recommend our premium care service (Luxury Item Care). Please check the item's current condition together with our staff in store or discuss it online (e.g. leather wear, oxidized hardware), and have it noted on the cleaning ticket.

2. Cleaning and stain removal results (reasonable expectations)

About difficult stains:For sweat, blood, ink, juice, paint, old yellow stains or mildew, we do our best with professional enzymes and stain removers on the affected area. If a stain is very old, or the fibers have already deteriorated or taken on the color, we cannot promise it will come out completely.

Special materials:

  • Unstable or non-colorfast dyes: if a garment's dye is not colorfast, it may fade slightly after cleaning.
  • Coatings / PU faux leather / waterproof seam tape: these materials have a limited lifespan (usually 2–3 years) and may peel or lose seam tape during cleaning due to hydrolysis and aging. If peeling has already started, it will usually get worse after cleaning, so please keep this in mind.

3. Storage of uncollected items

Collect on time:When your items are ready, we will send you a text message. Please collect them with your claim ticket within 30 days of the notice, or contact us to arrange delivery.

Late storage fee:From day 31, a storage fee of NT$10–20 per item per day applies to uncollected items (up to 3 months).

Abandonment of ownership:Items not collected more than 6 months after the notice date are considered abandoned by the customer. We may recycle, donate or otherwise dispose of them to free up storage space, and the customer may not object or claim compensation.

4. Checking items at pickup and handling disputes

Check on the spot:When collecting, please check on the spot that the number of items and accessories (e.g. belts, fur collars, liners) are complete, and check the cleaning quality.

Re-cleaning window:If you find an item not fully clean or poorly pressed, bring it back to the shop with your receipt within 3 days of pickup (with our laundry tag still attached and unworn), and we will redo it free of charge.

5. Compensation for loss or damage

We carry liability insurance. If a garment is seriously damaged, deformed or lost due to improper cleaning on our part, compensation follows the Ministry of Economic Affairs' "Mandatory and Prohibited Provisions for Standard Laundry Service Contracts":

  • Regular garments: compensation is a multiple of the item's cleaning price (usually capped at 5 to 20 times, depending on depreciation).
  • Valuable items without a declared value: if the value was not declared in advance and the item did not go through our premium care process, total compensation is capped (e.g. no more than NT$5,000–10,000).

Notes on Special Services

1. Down comforters / large bedding
Please check the bedding's care label when you buy it. Some natural silk and pure wool comforters are dry clean only or must not be washed. We never vacuum-compress animal fibers, to avoid physical damage to fibers and feather quills (down itself can be compressed).

2. Pet items
For hygiene, please remove loose hair and waste from pet clothing and beds before sending them in. We wash pet items separately using pet-specific disinfectant and dedicated machines, so you can send them with peace of mind.
